Comparing Cloud Servers vs. Dedicated Servers

7/20/2011

As the buzz surrounding cloud computing grows, it’s important to understand the real benefits of cloud computing for businesses. If you or your clients are considering moving from a dedicated server to a cloud server, consider the following:

A cloud server (or a virtual machine) is a "virtualized" server that leverages hardware and network resources, while a dedicated server is a physical server that is only allocated to one customer. New virtual machines can be provisioned very quickly; in fact, at ValueReseller we can spin up new VM's for our clients in as little as 15 minutes.

Unlike physical servers, virtual machines feature "high availability." The difference is: if a dedicated server has a hardware problem, your website or application is dead in the water; whereas, a virtual machine in a high availability environment like ValueReseller's is simply migrated automatically to new hardware.

Virtual machines can also be setup quickly and the resources of virtual machines can be scaled up or down as needed with zero downtime. With dedicated servers, customers usually have to sign a long-term contract, pay set-up fees, and typically have to wait days for the server to be installed. And if you have to upgrade memory or hard drive space that means there will be downtime.

Finally, virtual machines often feature many value-added features, such as firewall security, high availability, load balancing, and DDoS protection. These extra services are usually only available to dedicated server customers who buy specialized hardware.
